New Years Omens

In the spirit of my new years resolution of losing 3 kilograms by the end of February, I was up bright and early this morning for a 3 hour bike ride. Then things started to conspire against me as early as 5:00am.

    1. There was a thunder storm in progress, which isn’t a problem if you want to get struck by lightning. So for safety I postponed the ride by 30 minutes to let the storm pass through.
    2. Just as I was heading out of the door the second time the heavens opened, and while I don’t mind getting wet on a ride, safety is always a consideration, particularly on new years morning in Cape Town when half the drivers on the road are likely to be roaring drunk and I need all the visibility I can get.
    3. As I settled in behind my computer to catch up on the world and wait for the rain to stop, there was a loud hissing sound from the bike room. Investigation showed that my rear wheel had blown an inner tube.

Now I’m not overly superstitious, but obviously someone was telling me something, and I strongly suspect that the message was to not ride my bike today. So instead of a ride which I have put off until tomorrow, I am going for an afternoon run on what will be day one of my Runners World sub 90 minute Two Oceans half marathon program.

Now I just need to find my spare running shoes, because I just broke a shoe lace on my favourite pair.
