Robyn Williams at Meerendal Wine Farm

For the last shoot of 2014, we were out at Meerendal Wine Farm, shooting top South African cross triathlete Robyn Williams, who was celebrating all her spanking new Specialized Bicycles South Africa gear, compliments of Freewheel Cycology. How stunning is that bike in white?

Thanks to Team Meerendal MultiSport for allowing us to use your lovely brand new singletrack.

IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa: One Month and counting.

It’s long distance Triathlon time. Who is doing IRONMAN South Africa 70.3 in East London in a Months time?
Here are some of my images from last year to get you in the mood, and to make sure you are motivated to get that last bit of training done. Nerves anyone?

Paarl Boxing Day Track Cycling

The Paarl Boxing Day Track cycling race, has been taking place for more than 100 years. Being mid summer in Africa, the day was hot, with no wind and big blue skies.
Families come out in their hordes to spectate at this event. It really is an annual institution that is supported by large numbers of local residents.

The B Spot

Tygerberg Mountain Bike club has excelled with this magical piece of trail at Bloemendal Wine farm in Durbanville, Western Cape, South Africa. It’s great for the entire family from todders upwards, and is excellent for skills training as well. Do the green route 3 times and you have clocked up 30km of really fun riding. Give it a go!

Prime Jailbreak 2014

Now in its 9th year, the Prime Cleaning Services Jailbreak Triathlon is an annual event held at the Brandvlei Correctional Services facility at Rawsonville in the Western Cape.

Sporting a long distance event (2.2km swim/88km bike/22km run) and a shorter minimum security’ version (1.1km swim/44km bike/11km run), the event has the unique distinction of being the only Triathlon in Africa (and probably anywhere else in the world) to be held on a working day. It is known as the the Tri on a Fri, and has a very unique holiday atmosphere. Enjoy the photos.

Western Province Triathlon Championships 2015

Yes, a Month before the new year, the 2015 champs were held at the beautiful Val de Vie estate, in Paarl near Cape Town.

With temperatures hitting an oven like 38 degrees C by midday, it was a sterling effort by all the entry groups to even start, let alone finish. People suffered, but they raced. With everything they had.

When I look back to the first triathlon that I raced in 2008 (WP Champs at Elsenberg), the increased  level of professionalism and expertise shown by the organisers and Triathlon South Africa is astounding. It’s small wonder then, that Triathlon was chosen as the top sporting code at the recent 2014 South African Sports Awards.

Well done everybody.

Tribe Tri Youth Triathlon

Tribe Tri Youth Events are taking the Western Cape of South Africa by storm, with triathlons targeted exclusively for kids and youth up to 19 years old. To call it a success would be an understatement. It is making a huge impact on the sport and the crew who run the series can be justly proud of themselves.

Faces Of Triathlon

One of the best parts of a triathlon is when the competitors line up at the start, listening to the swim briefing and mentally ticking off the seconds till the start. The tension is palpable, and even experienced triathletes have nerves that are  stretched to the limit. Those are the shots that I love.

Africa 3 Hour Endurance Motor Race

Killarney International Motor Race track in Cape Town hosted the  Africa 3 Hour endurance race. It’s not something that I would normally go and shoot, but it looked like fun and I had a free day. There is nothing like practising new crafts on a new subject, and with no one paying for the images I could afford to be a bit mad and not worry about delivering to a brief.

West Coast Wedding

It’s not too many photographers who get to shoot a wedding on a working game farm, yet this is the second time I have been lucky enough to do it. This time we were out at Buffelsfontein Game Farm on the West Coast of South Africa, between Cape Town and Langebaan.

The wedding ceremony itself happened a couple of days earlier, and this was to be a get-together of the couples friends, for a celebration and party.

Prior to the festivities it was time for a game drive with the entire family, to take some shots, enjoy the wildlife and catch the vibe. Great fun. Obviously being summer and on the West Coast, the light was super harsh, calling for a balance of sunnies to stop the glare, some squinting into the bright light and 100% flash power to beat the sun into submission.

Add to all of this some rhino and Wildebeest, (the number one and two killers of humans in the wild in Africa), and you have a recipe for a lot of fun, mixed with some really anxious adrenaline filled moments.

Willie the game-ranger kept a wary eye on the wildlife, while we tried not to wander too far (more than 10 meters) from the vehicle, in case he shouted for us to get out of there pronto.

It wasn’t an easy shoot by any means, but it was tons of fun and that’s my prerequisite for any job.
