Struisbaai MTB Classic

Here in South Africa, we are in the middle of the worst drought in living memory, (why are all droughts described like that?) so, as expected, when an MTB race is organised in one of the hottest regions of the Western Cape, it rains in biblical proportions.

Not that the weather detracted from a fantastic event. Riding for 7km on a very rideable beach, is always going to be a special part of the experience, no matter what the weather does.
Dirtopia are now looking after the logistics behind the scenes of this race, and I suspect that when word leaks out about just what a fantastic event this is, next years race is going to sell out.

Slanghoek Triathlon

The Slanghoek Triathlon in pictures…..

Triathletes compete in the Slanghoek Triathlon organised by Iqela Events in the Slanghoek Valley, near Rawsonville in the Western Cape of South Africa

This was shot from just above the surf line beyond what is known as Schoenmakerskop. I wanted to give some idea of how rugged the shoreline is along Marine Drive. Just 7 km later, riders would be riding through the bustling metropolis of Port Elizabeth

Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship.

The 2015 edition of the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship was held, as usual, at Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
This year the event pulled more pro racers from around the world than any other IRONMAN event except the world champs in Kona. T

That’s a tesament to the quality of the race and the people behind it.

Perdeberg MTB Fun Ride

Perdeberg MTB Funride

Cyclists compete in the Perdeberg Mountain Bike Funride. Held at The famous Perdeberg Winery in the Western Cape of South Africa, and organised by the masters of MTB organisation, Dirtopia, the inaugural Perdeberg MTB funride had both a 16 and a 32 km route. To add to the festivities, multiple world XTERRA champion Conrad Stolz pitched up on a fatbike to have some fun. Expect record numbers to enter this event next year.

Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa

Athletes compete in the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa Triathlon, held at Buffalo City, East London, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa on January 25 2015. The mens event was won by Matt Trautman after a ding dong battle with Stuart Marais, while Former World 70.3 champion Jodie Swallow destroyed the opposition to win the race for the 5th consecutive year, posting a record time in the process.

Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club Night Ride

If ever there was a good advert for mountain biking, it’s the weekly nightrides sponsored by Reeds Chevrolet and organised by the Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club in Durbanville, Cape Town.

It’s all about the fun, the smiles, the jol. The families and friendships. The Barnies Armies. The boerie rolls and lekker Bloemendal wine. The good life

I dig shooting the behind the scenes stuff, (and using 70’s expressions like ‘dig’), so if you are a speed merchant or race snake, chances are your photo isn’t in this gallery.

All these images were shot with the Canon 7D2 and 70-200mm f2.8 lens. No flash was used even when it got really dark.

Killarney Criterium Racing

Wednesday evening cycle racing at Killarney Race Track in Cape Town has become a bit of a tradition among the local racing crowd.

Starting at 18:00, the riders race for an hour plus an extra lap and it is a flat out, full on, uncompromising 60 minute pain fest. Points are awarded for the top 10 each week and they count toward the series championship, with a prize giving held at the end of the season for the overall winners.

So if you fancy some really good, hard training, from September to the end the end of February, bring your bike, slap down 30 bucks and come race.

Paarl Boxing Day Track Cycling

The Paarl Boxing Day Track cycling race, has been taking place for more than 100 years. Being mid summer in Africa, the day was hot, with no wind and big blue skies.
Families come out in their hordes to spectate at this event. It really is an annual institution that is supported by large numbers of local residents.

The B Spot

Tygerberg Mountain Bike club has excelled with this magical piece of trail at Bloemendal Wine farm in Durbanville, Western Cape, South Africa. It’s great for the entire family from todders upwards, and is excellent for skills training as well. Do the green route 3 times and you have clocked up 30km of really fun riding. Give it a go!
