Struisbaai MTB Classic

Here in South Africa, we are in the middle of the worst drought in living memory, (why are all droughts described like that?) so, as expected, when an MTB race is organised in one of the hottest regions of the Western Cape, it rains in biblical proportions.

Not that the weather detracted from a fantastic event. Riding for 7km on a very rideable beach, is always going to be a special part of the experience, no matter what the weather does.
Dirtopia are now looking after the logistics behind the scenes of this race, and I suspect that when word leaks out about just what a fantastic event this is, next years race is going to sell out.

Spur Schools MTB series # 1 2015. Meerendal

Scholars compete in round 1 of the Spur Schools MTB series, organized by Dirtopia at Meerendal Wine Farm outside Durbanville, Western Cape South Africa on 20th June 2015.

This was shot from just above the surf line beyond what is known as Schoenmakerskop. I wanted to give some idea of how rugged the shoreline is along Marine Drive. Just 7 km later, riders would be riding through the bustling metropolis of Port Elizabeth

Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship.

The 2015 edition of the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship was held, as usual, at Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
This year the event pulled more pro racers from around the world than any other IRONMAN event except the world champs in Kona. T

That’s a tesament to the quality of the race and the people behind it.

Held at The famous Perdeberg Winery in the Western Cape of South Africa, and organised by the masters of MTB organisation, Dirtopia, the inaugural Perdeberg MTB funride had both a 16 and a 32 km route. To add to the festivities, multiple world XTERRA champion Conrad Stolz pitched up on a fatbike to have some fun. Expect record numbers to enter this event next year.

Stihl SA National MTB DHI Cup Series #1

Stihl SA National MTB DHI Cup Series #1

The popular Contermanskloof track in Durbanville, Western Cape, played host to the opening round of the Stihl SA National MTB DHI Cup Series, in partnership with the Western Province Mountain Biking Commission, on Sunday 22 February. Blisteringly hot conditions made it difficult for the competitors as well as spectators. With no water available up on the mountain it was a case of take up what you need adding 1kg per litre to the weight of my normal equipment .

All my images from the day are available for download on the PhotoSport Website.

Killarney Criterium Racing

Wednesday evening cycle racing at Killarney Race Track in Cape Town has become a bit of a tradition among the local racing crowd.

Starting at 18:00, the riders race for an hour plus an extra lap and it is a flat out, full on, uncompromising 60 minute pain fest. Points are awarded for the top 10 each week and they count toward the series championship, with a prize giving held at the end of the season for the overall winners.

So if you fancy some really good, hard training, from September to the end the end of February, bring your bike, slap down 30 bucks and come race.
