Alpha Zero Tunnel Run

Not many people know that when they built the Huguenot Tunnel through the mountains above the town of Paarl in the Western Cape of South Africa, they built a second ‘service’ tunnel alongside it. This tunnel is the same size as the onm ne used as a toll road for traffic, it just isn’t finished off with a smooth concrete lining, merely a gunite shell. A lot like an upside down swimming pool I suppose.

So if not many people know that the tunnel exists, even fewer have been inside it. So those who raced the Alpha Zero Tunnel run, got the unique privilege of going through it twice.

All of the images from the race are available for download on the PhotoSport website.

Cape Town Cycle Tour 2015

Cape Town Cycle Tour

Riders compete in the 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour. With a dramatically shortened route, following the devastating fires that wept through the region in the week prior to the race, the leaders came in after just 1 hour and 2 minutes. As usual though, the cycle tour was all about the guys at the back. This year most of the riders were paying homage and giving thanks, to the brave firefighters who spent countless hours fighting the fires and keeping us all safe. Bravo everyone

Cystic Fibrosis Cycling

Cystic Fibrosis Cycling (RSA)

After receiving a prognosis of a 10year life span at the age of 8 months, Jason Van’t Slot is celebrating his 20th year of living with Cystic Fibrosis by cycling the beguiling and gruelling ABSA Cape Epic in 2015. He is supported by his father and manager, Barry Van’t Slot and his close friend and team mate, elite debut triathlete, Philipp Sassie.

Born as a twin, one with the disease and the other without, Jason’s story is one of a family who has had to deal head on with a twist of fate that would test their mettle under a ticking clock. Jason wants to share his struggles and his triumphs, to enhance the lives of others living with cystic fibrosis, by serving as a living example that the disease need not be a death sentence. Through positive and rigorous living, and the benefits of early detection, Cystic Fibrosis is a challenge that can be overcome.

Starting at 18:00, the riders race for an hour plus an extra lap and it is a flat out, full on, uncompromising 60 minute pain fest. Points are awarded for the top 10 each week and they count toward the series championship, with a prize giving held at the end of the season for the overall winners.

So if you fancy some really good, hard training, from September to the end the end of February, bring your bike, slap down 30 bucks and come race.

Paarl Boxing Day Track Cycling

The Paarl Boxing Day Track cycling race, has been taking place for more than 100 years. Being mid summer in Africa, the day was hot, with no wind and big blue skies.
Families come out in their hordes to spectate at this event. It really is an annual institution that is supported by large numbers of local residents.
