Slanghoek Triathlon

The Slanghoek Triathlon in pictures…..

Triathletes compete in the Slanghoek Triathlon organised by Iqela Events in the Slanghoek Valley, near Rawsonville in the Western Cape of South Africa

This was shot from just above the surf line beyond what is known as Schoenmakerskop. I wanted to give some idea of how rugged the shoreline is along Marine Drive. Just 7 km later, riders would be riding through the bustling metropolis of Port Elizabeth

Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship.

The 2015 edition of the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship was held, as usual, at Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
This year the event pulled more pro racers from around the world than any other IRONMAN event except the world champs in Kona. T

That’s a tesament to the quality of the race and the people behind it.

Perdeberg MTB Fun Ride

Perdeberg MTB Funride

Cyclists compete in the Perdeberg Mountain Bike Funride. Held at The famous Perdeberg Winery in the Western Cape of South Africa, and organised by the masters of MTB organisation, Dirtopia, the inaugural Perdeberg MTB funride had both a 16 and a 32 km route. To add to the festivities, multiple world XTERRA champion Conrad Stolz pitched up on a fatbike to have some fun. Expect record numbers to enter this event next year.

Paarl Boxing Day Track Cycling

The Paarl Boxing Day Track cycling race, has been taking place for more than 100 years. Being mid summer in Africa, the day was hot, with no wind and big blue skies.
Families come out in their hordes to spectate at this event. It really is an annual institution that is supported by large numbers of local residents.

Prime Jailbreak 2014

Now in its 9th year, the Prime Cleaning Services Jailbreak Triathlon is an annual event held at the Brandvlei Correctional Services facility at Rawsonville in the Western Cape.

Sporting a long distance event (2.2km swim/88km bike/22km run) and a shorter minimum security’ version (1.1km swim/44km bike/11km run), the event has the unique distinction of being the only Triathlon in Africa (and probably anywhere else in the world) to be held on a working day. It is known as the the Tri on a Fri, and has a very unique holiday atmosphere. Enjoy the photos.

Resolution Health Ride The Rhino MTB Race

‘The Renosterveld Ride’ began as the dream of a man who had the vision and passion to link the remaining fragments of Renosterveld, using MTB rides as awareness campaigns and to generate funds to achieve the goal. Justin Basson has made this opportunity possible by providing the vision and with his partner Heidi Eloff they will be presenting the fifth race this year. The Ride the Rhino encourages all anti-Rhino poaching initiatives and is involved with the Endangered Wildlife Trust, Fairy Glen Game Reserve and others to fight against the merciless killing of our Rhinos.

The Renosterveld Event MTB rides are not only a riding challenge, but also a challenge to help rescue Renosterveld, one of the most endangered habitats in the world. Today only 4% of it is left in the Western Cape. Our events will run through as many areas of Renosterveld as possible, and 15% of the proceeds from race entries will go directly back into the Renosterveld Trust to help with rehabilitation.

The Ride the Rhino route, the first of it’s kind on the West Coast of South Africa, is through a rugged and beautiful area that offers some of the best riding terrain in Nature’s garden, from rough back roads to sandy tracks to koppies and mountains. The area boasts flowers, animals and a beauty that is unsurpassed, and as riders travel the route, they will see Table Mountain looming ever closer.

The objective of the event is to do the same for the West Coast as the Sani2C did for the Umkomaas and its people-in the form of social upliftment and community involvement.

ITU Discovery World Triathlon Series Cape Town

When you are as big a fan of triathlon as I am, then you’ll know, when the ITU World triathlon Series rolls into my home town of Cape Town it is a major deal. I was lucky enough to be asked to photograph the event for the event organisers. These are just a sample of some of the images from the day.
